At the Dentist

Your treatment

We make every attempt to make your experience as comfortable as possible.

A referral to an endodontist doesn't necessarily mean there is a serious problem. It could simply be that your dentist wants to ensure you receive the best possible care for your specific dental issue.

Depending on the problem, most endodontic treatments are completed in two or possibly a single visit. Root canal treatment at North Shore Endodontics typically involves:

01

Referral from your dentist

All appointments are made following a referral from your dentist.

We will assess your specific needs and contact you to arrange appointments.

02

Consultation and assessment

Your first appointment will generally be a comprehensive consultation and examination, with xrays and photos. A CT scan may also be needed.

Your endodontist will discuss your treatment needs and options and may start endodontic treatment at this first visit.

03

Treatment appointments

A typical root canal procedure involves local anaesthesia to numb the area around the tooth, ensuring that you remain comfortable.

Then using specialised training and equipment, the root canal will be cleared of infected or inflamed pulp, cleaned, shaped and filled.

Filling materials close the canals to prevent further contamination.

Your endodontist may request a follow-up appointment to complete your treatment, depending on the complexity of the problem.

04

Restoration

After a root canal, the tooth typically requires a restoration to protect it and restore its function. This usually involves placing a crown, which is a tooth-shaped cap that covers the entire tooth, or an onlay, which covers a smaller portion of the tooth.

Should the tooth already be crowned, the access will be closed with a suitable restorative material.

05

What to expect after endodontic treatment

Some discomfort after treatment is normal and over the counter medication may be needed. Most patients return to their normal daily routine after treatment.

It is unusual for patients to experience complications after conventional root canal treatment or microsurgery. While most patients have a smooth recovery after endodontic treatment, individual experiences may vary.

If you have any concerns or experience severe pain, excessive swelling, or other unusual symptoms after the procedure, be sure to contact us or your dentist for for further evaluation and advice.

06

Review

We recommend a periodic review, either with us or with your dentist, generally after 6 - 12 months.
